About and Learn

What is Pétanque

Pétanque is a traditional French throwing game played outdoors on gravel, dirt, decomposed granite, and other natural surfaces.

Players take turns tossing hollow steel balls called *boules*, trying to land as close as possible to a small wooden target ball known as the *cochonnet*.

The game is easy to begin, surprisingly strategic, and welcoming to people of all ages and skill levels.

At Legation Boules Club, pétanque is as much about conversation and community as it is about competition.

No experience is needed to join us.

Some players enjoy casual social games, while others participate in tournaments and regional competitions. Most enjoy both.

The game works especially well in Austin because of the city’s outdoor culture, mild winters, and appreciation for informal public gathering spaces.
